Ukraine Biofuels law
Ukraine's parliament has passed a law requiring nine Ukrainian cities with a population of over 500,000 to start using biofuels in vehicles by 2010. Under the law, the government will secure sufficient biofuel production and also take legislative measure to impose the use of biofuels. The plan is that by 2008, around 50% of all vehicles in the cities will be converted to run on green fuel, and by 2009 it will become obligatory for all vehicles in the cities. Bioethanol blending in fuel will be mandated, and in 2008 should account for at least 2% of the fuel reaching 3% in 2009, 5% 2010 and 10% in 2011. By 2010, Ukraine expects to build 20 biodiesel plants providing total production capacity of 623,000 tonnes a year. There are also eight local spirit plants that have been adapted for the production of biofuels from sugar refining residuals.
